You can also reorder pages by dragging thumbnails — a gesture that works smoothly, though the drag sensitivity is a bit high; I sometimes accidentally swapped two pages. Rotating individual pages is tucked inside the edit menu, not immediately obvious. I ended up rotating the wrong page once. Deleting pages is straightforward, but you can only remove whole pages, not crop content.
Password Protection and Watermarks – Not Just a Checkbox
Adding a password is simple: enter it twice, pick encryption level (128 or 256-bit), and the file locks instantly. I tested opening the protected PDF on another device — it prompted correctly. Watermarking is where things get finicky. You can add text or an image, but the position presets (corner, center, tile) don't allow manual dragging. I wanted the watermark in the bottom-right corner, but it clipped into the page margin. The opacity slider works well, at least. For a free app, these limitations are tolerable, but power users might want more control.
What PDF Utils Doesn't Tell You (The Drawbacks)
After a few weeks of daily use, I hit three real pain points. First, there's no OCR — if your PDF is a scanned image, you cannot search or copy text. Second, the split feature requires you to enter page numbers manually; you can't just draw a range from a preview. I once mistyped the page interval and had to re-export. Third, the app struggles with PDFs over 50 MB. Merging two such files caused a force close on my 4 GB RAM device. The app also has ads in the free version — a banner at the bottom, not intrusive, but still there.
Who Should Really Use This App?
If you're a student who needs to combine lecture slides into one file, or an office worker who occasionally password-protects a contract, PDF Utils covers those bases well. But if you handle hundreds of pages daily, need OCR, or require precise watermark placement, look elsewhere. The app is free with optional in-app purchases (removing ads and batch conversion limits). I ended up buying the pro version for $3.99 because the ad-free experience and unlimited merges were worth it. Just don't expect enterprise-grade stability — it's a solid daily driver for light to moderate use.
